Sound Mill, an application offered by Breakthru Software to Windows users from all over the world, packs three different bits of functionality: it can be used to play audio files, to efficiently organize your collection of sound effects, and to automate sound playback. This is a tool that is ideally suited for sound designers, theaters, museums, haunted mansions, and any other person or business that needs to manage and automate effects playback.

Sound Mill can be installed on anything from Windows 8 down to Windows XP SP2, 32 as well as 64-bit flavors of the Microsoft-developed operating system. To get the application up and running, you will have to go through a standard setup procedure: download an installer, run it, follow the instructions presented by a setup wizard. To get started with the application after that, to test its functionality, you must request a 30-day evaluation key or purchase a license.

The nice thing about the interface of Sound Mill is that it can be customized. There are two ways to customize the interface. First up, you can customize it by choosing what you see on the interface: show/hide edit panel, expand all/collapse all sections, choose which toolbars you want to use. Next up, you can change the interface’s feel by using a custom skin.

From a functionality point of view, Sound Mill has the following to offer: manage a collection of sounds and sound effects, automate the sound playback, scheduler function, works with other audio programs, can be controlled remotely, Kiosk mode, fade in/out marker, loop play, find functions, list sorting, and more. To sum it up, you are presented with a nice selection of features and functions that will help you turn your ideas into working sound design.

The Sound Mill trial comes with multiple limitations: cannot save or open any work files, program settings will not be saved, the application will timeout after 30 minutes, several other minor limitations. As mentioned above, you can request a key for a 30-day trial from the official Sound Mill website.

Play multiple audio files in sequence, manage your audio collection, and remotely control the quite handy Sound Mill sound effects manager.

Pros

Installing Sound Mill is a very simple matter. The interface can be customized. Sound Mill provides lots of features that will help you play and manage a collection of sound effects.

Cons

The trial version has limited functionality to offer.
